Sussex Wedding Band - Phonographs - FAQs

How much space do you need?

A comfortable space to set up and play would be around 3x5 metres, though as a trio we can fit into smaller spaces.

How is it best to time things?

We would recommend planning the sets around when the food is served, people generally want to eat without the noise of band playing and it’s far more fun for everyone to have guests up and ready to dance!

We find two hour long sets seem to work best but we are happy to do three 40min sets if required.

Can I pick the bands playlist?

We are perfectly happy for you to pick and choose which songs you’d like from the existing repertoire. It’s worth checking through to see if there are songs you definitely want, or songs you definitely don’t.

Where will you travel to?

We are based in Sussex but are happy to travel UK-wide.

Can I see you play live?

Every so often we play shows in Brighton to have fun and test new material. For those outside of the area though it’s less likely, we tend to only travel for functions gigs.

Will you learn our special song?

If you have a special song in mind for a first dance get in touch and we’ll see if we can accommodate! We would ask for as much notice as possible to see if we can make the song fit our sound and to give us plenty of time to learn it thoroughly.

Is the video on your website a true reflection of the band?

The video on the site was filmed live and is an exact representation of how we sound! Some songs have additional synth parts on backing track too for a full sound with maximum impact!

How do I book you?

You can book us through the enquiries section if this site or via our agency – 0845 094 3815 www.alivenetwork.com/phonographs

We are available through our social media pages for informal discussions about your event, though we do ask all official bookings go through either our site or Alive.

Are you able to DJ in between sets?

Yes, we offer a DJ package to soundtrack the event before, in-between and after our sets.

Can we make DJ requests in advance to my event?

We are happy to accommodate requests if we already own the song in question. It can be too costly for us to purchase songs for every event we play.

Can we use your sound system for speeches?

Yes, absolutely, depending on how your event is timed and laid out. We currently do not have radio microphones, so please bear that in mind if our PA is required for speeches.

What equipment do you use?

Having been professional musicians for so many years, the band has accumulated a wealth of top-level equipment. Josh and Clark use Fender, Gibson and custom-made boutique guitars & basses; Mesa Boogie, Fender & Mark Bass amps, as well as a host of boutique effects pedals. Lawrie uses Ludwig drums and Paiste cymbals for his acoustic kit, and a Yamaha DTX 900K for the electric kit.

Do you have lights?

We currently have a basic light bar setup, but will be upgrading in the very near future.

How long do you play for?

Our set can be divided into either two 1hr sets or three 40min sets, depending which you’d prefer. We can offer additional material, which can be negotiated at the time of booking.

What time do you start and finish?

Our standard option is for a midnight finish, including DJ options and background music. Our start time will depend how the set is divided. A later finish is also offered as an additional option. Some venues may have a noise curfew so we advise checking in advance of the big day.

How long do you take to set up?

We can be set up in an hour. If the electric drum kit is booked, we will need an extra half an hour due to the intricate nature of setting it up. We may also require some extra time if an additional acoustic set is booked, as we will have to set up two different sets of instruments.

Can I provisionally book you?

Unfortunately we cannot accept provisional bookings. We are more than happy to give first refusal if you have already generated a quote on our website or via the Alive agency.

What if the band split up before my event?

Phonographs is a new band, setup to be our main source of income. In the highly unlikely event of us splitting up, every effort will be made to find you a suitable and fitting replacement.

Can my sisters/bosses/daughters dog sing with your band?

We can accommodate this where possible, absolutely. We would ask for a prior discussion though, and would also ask that anyone joining us onstage refrains from bringing drinks with them – we depend on our equipment, and spillages are never fun!

What will the band wear?

We are happy to tailor our look to your event, whether it is formal attire or a more casual look.

Does the band have PAT and PLI certificates?

Yes, our equipment is PAT tested and we have PLI for up to 10 million.

Why should I book Phonographs?

Phonographs are a fun-fuelled power-pop experience; you won’t find anyone else quite like them! Drawing from a repertoire of the choicest cuts spanning from the 80’s to current chart hits, Phonographs deliver a fun, unique and skilfully delivered set for any event. Whether staying true to original arrangements or putting their own spin on the tunes, the band has a sound that is uniquely theirs. With one foot in the 80’s and the other firmly in the now; they love playing music together and it shows.

The band has a wealth of experience from over 10 years in the music industry. Having played shows across Europe, Asia, Australia and America; they have graced the stages of o2 Arena and Shepherds Bush Empire, and played alongside the likes of Mcfly, Ed Sheeran, Razorlight, The Feeling, YouMeAtSix, Vampire Weekend, Seasick Steve, and Rick Springfield. They have done session work for Kylie, Will Young, X-Factor, as well as having played major festivals across Europe.

How much does it cost to book the band?

Prices will vary depending on location and any additional booking options, but our standard prices start from £726.

Can we see some previous client testimonials?

As we are a new band, we don’t have any testimonials online yet.

Do Phonographs have any specific requirements?

We only ask for a room or separate space to change, and some food and drink whilst we are there.

What type/size venues are you able to play at?

We have played in all manner of places round the globe, type and size of venue isn’t an issue for us – as long as there are plug sockets nearby!

How loud will the band be?

This will vary depending on the required setup, but we will always be happy to work with our clients to ensure guests are happy and able to converse. Our loudest mode is fun and engaging for guests up and dancing, but not too intrusive for those elsewhere. We also have the handy option of an electric drumkit, so if you have a venue with a sound limiter in place we can bring the volume down to required levels.

It is worth bearing in mind that a normal (non-electric) drumkit has no volume dial and can only be so quiet.

What is the band power requirement?

We need at least two 13 amp plug sockets as close to the stage as possible. We have extension cables to cater for our amps and sound equipment, and our lighting gear will be run from a separate power source to the audio to avoid interference.

Do Phonographs offer any additional services?

Absolutely! We offer various acoustic set options for either the main event or for earlier drinks receptions. We offer a DJ package to soundtrack the whole event, and have the option of a later finish. We can also offer extended set and DJ times too. Please get in touch to discuss any ideas you may have that aren’t on our list!
